Walter Scott Lenox and Jonathan
Coxon Sr. founded the Ceramic Art Company in 1889 in Trenton, New Jersey.
Lenox acquired sole ownership of the company in 1894, and in 1906 formed
Lenox, Inc.
In 1917, President Woodrow
Wilson ordered a 1,700 piece dinner set, gaining Lenox national recognition.
Following President Wilson's lead, President's Roosevelt and Truman also
ordered Lenox china. In 1981, First Lady Nancy Reagan ordered a 4,732-piece
set of gold-embossed bone china from Lenox. For this Presidential set, Lenox
craftsmen hand-painted each raised gold seal in the center of the service, a
task that took nearly 3 hours on each piece.
Over the last 20 years, Lenox
has expanded into many other product lines including glass and jewelry.
