Royal Doulton
Royal Doulton began with John
Doulton investing in a small pottery which produced practical and decorative
stoneware in London in 1815. Sir Henry Doulton, John Doulton's son, expanded
the products to include sanitaryware, drainpipes, and other related
porcelain and ceramics products, establishing the company at the forefront
of the ceramics industry. In 1877, the business invested in a factory in
Stoke-on-Trent, which later began producing bone chine tableware.
In 1901, King Edward VII
authorized Doulton to use the word "Royal" to describe its products, and in
1966, Royal Doulton was the first china manufacturer to be awarded The
Queen's Award for Technological Achievement.
In the 1960's and 70's, Royal
Doulton sold its interests in stoneware drainpipe and sanitaryware
production. In 1968 Royal Doulton purchased Minton, and in 1969 purchased
Webb Corbett, a manufacturer of crystal, and John Beswick, a specialist in
the manufacture of animal studies in earthenware.
In 1972, Royal Doulton was
acquired by Pearson, and merged with Allied English Potteries. The merger
brought Royal Albert, Royal Crown Derby, and the Lawley's chain of retail
china and glass shops into Royal Doulton, establishing it as one of the
world's largest manufacturers of fine bone china.
